We survived our first detox fasting!

We have finished the detox! Detoxing and not eating made us think about food.  This past week has been full of detox drinks, colemas, herbal supplements and laxatives. Almost every night we dreamt about food and it was not easy.  We realized how much we are attached to food, even when our body does not really need it. We are very happy we have done this program as it is probably one of the most important steps for us to move into a holistic well-being.  Fasting (or semi-fasting) targets the body, the mind and to a certain extent the spirit.

Body: We have lost significant weight very quickly (Salvador almost 8 kilos) and we managed to do Yoga almost every day.  We are getting quickly back in shape. We are more flexible and more energetic. Internally we feel our blood cleaner and purified.

Now that the fast is over, we know that if we return to our same diet then we will lose our lively state of being.  Besides, we would gain the weight back and probably put on extra weight.. So we need to change some of our old eating habits.

With this in mind we have decided to educate ourselves on healthy eating. We have read the ancient ways of eating in Asia, eating healthy with whole foods, raw foods, food combinations and more. You can expect to see more on this topic soon.

Mind:  This week has been a roller coaster for our minds. Up, downs, left and right and then again up and down. The first day we were all excited to start a detox program. Day 2 without food and with the detoxification starting to kick in we felt a bit miserable. Day 3 was a repeat of day 2 the only difference was that we slept poorly the night before and in the little sleep we had we dreamt about food. Day 4, 5 and 6 were probably some of the best days of our lives. We woke up full of energy, our minds clear and a very active unpolluted mind. The energy level lowered a little in the afternoon/night and we would forget basic things such as where we put the keys or if we had taken our pills (for Tarci this is normal but for Salva is a big deal).

We fed our minds with great books we borrowed and deep conversations with researchers, writers, teachers and several other interesting people we met at the Spa.

Day 7 was the last stretch and we were just happy to know we did not have to be tied to a schedule with literally 19 activities every day (including 2 colon enemas!)

Spirit:  Fasting is the world’s most ancient and natural healing mechanism and for some people it is also a Spiritual experience. Hindu Yogis are famous fasters and colon cleansers. Muslims fast during Ramadan, the Jewish calendar has several fast days and both Jesus and Buddha fasted for up to 40 days at a time.

While we did not have any major spiritual experience, we felt the thirst for greater spiritual knowledge.  Every morning we went to meditation class and during the difficult times we would breathe into the aching parts of our bodies. It is pretty amazing how we have the power to heal ourselves.

Usually the last session of our meditation classes were dedicated to send Love & Kindness to people in need.  Since we were “starving”, we talked about the difficulties and sufferings that children have to endure due to the lack of food.  Maybe because of this we came across a video of a starving boy drinking milk from a street dog. This video affected us greatly at a spiritual level and put things in perspective.

Why a Cleansing Fast and How to Prepare?

The following sections are directly transcribed from the booklet we received. We hope you find this helpful to understand better what we are doing and to make a better informed decision if you ever thought about doing one of these cleansing fast programs:

Overview:

These programs work as a healing mechanism. They start working at full potential after 24-36 hours without the intake of food. Our healing mechanism works best when we stop eating, ingesting, digesting and metabolizing food.

Our bodies switch to DETOXIFICATION MODE and remove parasites, toxins and potentially cancerous cells. This waste material is then dumped into the bloodstream for excretion through the liver, colon, lungs and skin. The tired and weak feeling experience during the first 3 to 4 days are due entirely to the presence of these toxins and other waste matter waiting to be excreted, NOT the lack of food. Incidentally, you will be taking so many detoxifying drinks, cleansing herbs and nutritional herbs, you will not get physically hungry at all.

These programs will remove large amounts of toxic and waste materials from your system and also promote the loss of many kilos of putrefied matter and fat. This will enable your body to begin to RE-BUILD and REJUVENATE, thus giving you more vitality and help prevent further illness. Learn to follow the “Five Habit System” of cleansing, breathing properly, food combining, exercise, meditation and peacefulness. All of these help to make a healthier and happier life!

Step 1: How to prepare yourself (the correct way)

Before starting any fasting program we strongly encourage you to do what we call a “Pre-cleanse”. This should be for at least 2-3 days, or even 1-2 weeks! It depends how toxic you think you can be – everyone is different.

Basically this involves eating only fruit, salad and only slighted cooked vegetables with juices, herb teas and plenty of pure water. No meat, processed foods, alcohol, caffeine or soft drinks. We have specially designed what we call our “LIVER FLUSH DIET” which consists of salads, veggie soups, lighly steamed vegetables and our famous liver flush drink. This drink has extra virgin oil, fresh garlic, ginger and cayenne pepper mixed with freshly squeezed orange juice and lemon. It starts the process of elimination by assisting the liver, kidneys and call bladder to detoxify and cleanse.

ingredients for 2 portions:

Orange Juice – 2 cups

Lime Juice – 2 table spoons

Garlic – 2 cloves

Ginger – 2 pieces

Olive oil – 2 table spoons

Cayenne pepper – 2 capsules of 500 mg each

However, if you want to add more ginger or garlic. You can do..!

Instructions:

Blend everything in a high power blender for 1 minute or until all ingredients are well mixed together.  Enjoy it!

Cooking and Staying Healthy

One of our goals for this trip is to become more healthy and we plan to take a holistic approach to “healthy”. We will focus our efforts in the body, mind and soul. This week we will start a pre-cleansing process by eliminating all processed foods, meats and complex carbohydrates – including eliminating coffee and bread. For those that know us this is very hard! In other words, this week we are only allowed to eat veggies and fruits.

The pre-cleansing will be followed by 7 days of guided fasting. We will have a rigorous liquid diet with herbal supplements, ampuku abdominal massages, Thai herbal, steam room and colemas… let’s see if we survive!

It has been a great adventure and challenge to find our food for this week in a country where we don’t speak the language and where we are limited to only fruits and some veggies. Tarci signed up for a cooking course of “raw foods” to make sure we have variety in our meals as we plan to eat at home to save money.

Requirements Before the Trip

Our journey started with a “pre-trip” visit to Brasil and the US. We had about 2 weeks with family eating every single Brazilian dish. Salvador tried for the first time muqueca, escondidinho de charque, feijoada, bacalhau cooked in 4 different forms, acaraje, empadinha de queijo coalho, arrumadinho de carne de sol, camarão na moranga, tapioca, feijao verde, casquinha de caranguejo and probably a different dessert for each one of our meals!
